Consecutive interpreting is a classic form of interpreting in terms of words being interpreted after having been spoken. The speaker makes some remarks, and then the interpreter takes over, translating the respective comments into a foreign language. The speech therefore takes twice as long.

Unilateral interpreting is when speech is interpreted in just one direction. Bilateral (or liaison) interpreting is when an interpreter translates into both languages, enabling communication between two speakers- e.g. in interviews or negotiations.

Consecutive interpreting dates from a time before interpreting equipment was available. It is still used today on ceremonial or diplomatic occasions. Or when a budget doesn’t allow for cost-intensive services.

• Examples of use: Due to the large amount of time required, consecutive interpreting is now rarely used at conferences. It is more widely used on ceremonial occasions (after-dinner speeches or gala dinners), or cultural events such as book readings or film premieres.
• Advantages: No costs for interpreting equipment. One interpreter per language is usually sufficient.
• Disadvantages: Not suitable for large conferences or meetings with a lively exchange of information. This type of interpreting is not dynamic and is very time-intensive.
